Post subject:  Noncontact diagnostic testing - Thermal Imaging / IR Survey

NFPA 70E 205.4 General Maintenance Requirements Informational Note 2 states: “Noncontact diagnostic methods in addition to scheduled maintenance activities of electrical equipment can assist in the identification of electrical anomalies.”

A thermal imaging/infrared (IR) survey program can identify thermal anomalies that may indicate a potential failure.

The question: Has your company/clients had a thermal imaging / IR survey performed?
Yes – once
Yes – scheduled regularly
No
I’m not sure
Depends on which site
N/A Not applicable
Other – please explain

Yes. As an electrical contractor we provide IR imaging and reports for many of our high production clients. Unfortunately, it is driven by potential loss of revenue and or profit, more than for the sake of a safe workplace. Many manufacturers, require their suppliers to perform IR as part of guaranteeing the delivery of their product. I personally see this in the automotive and aerospace production industries.

Additionally, as part of our "D.E.S.K. Level 2" (Demonstrated Electrical Skills & Knowledge program) certification, our electricians carry a pocket IR cam to use as part of their intra-EEW Risk Assessment. This is because, we know that with the doors on and without IR windows, the actual likelihood may change once the dead-front is removed. Of course this wouldn't affect the PPE where it's already required, but it may trigger PPE it in a situation where some would not use PPE such as infrared imaging itself, and would likely trigger a change in scope or work plan. Our workers are trained to stop work and de-energize, or if unable to do so, replace the covers until de-energized to complete the repair.
