I work for a large manufacturing company. There is no LOTO or arc flash program in affect. We have brought up LOTO and arc flash to the department head. His response is its to expensive and not required so were not going to do it. Does anyone have any ideas how we might convince him otherwise, without causing a rift between management and the electrical department?

Drop a dime w/OSHA.

Have them ask your insurance carrier, or better yet have them contact their legal counsel and see what the companies exposure is for not following Federal law.

Educate and convince



I always hate to hear that everyone's initial response is to call OSHA. Educate yourself about the NFPA-70E content and convince management that following 70E is a cost savings rather than an expense. Shoot..you might even get a raise by showing some initiative.

Thats what I'd like to do and one reason I found and posted on this form. Is there a way to educate myself about nfpa 70 e its hard to read and understand.

Ignoring safety is extremely dangerous, careless, and potentially expensive. Companies are all concerned about reducing their liability exposure. Implementing an electrical safety program and performing an Arc Flash Hazard Analysis will go a long way toward reducing the company's liability exposure.

And remember....the real cost of these accidents usually is not the OSHA fine. These costs include bad publicity and law suits from the former employee's family.
