Is lexan over main disconnect and fuses a good idea for industrial panels ranging from 30 amps to 400 amps. If an arc flash were to occur at the main disconnect what happens to the lexan. Does it become a projectile, a molten mass of plastic or will it help protect personnel?

I would think that any non-conductive cover that would help prevent inadvertent contact with the body or tools would help. I would also think that hot plastic shouldn't be as bad as copper or stainless steel. After all, the extra barrier just might keep someone from making that mistake.

I agree with Alan but have to add, you dont really know what will happen to the barrier. As far as your arc flash calcs and PPE selection, pretend it is not there.

Absolutely

I started to add that no barrier protection should be considered but figured that is was just to be used for extra protection from contact. Also thought that it was a good idea since it is clear, you can still see what is there. How about drilling some small holes so it does not need to be removed for voltage tests?
