Newbie question:

I understand that arc flashes in an industrial setting are almost always accidental and unwanted incidents. Is there ever a reason to purposefully cause an arc flash, though? Maybe for some sort of maintenance/testing procedure?

Thanks,

Zach

Lab setting for testing PPE.
Lab setting for demo video showing off an arc flash.

Industrial setting? Never heard of it purposefully.

Arc flash testing. Especially arc resistant gear.

Testing/studying circuit breaker interruption process.

Some of the very slow air switches at higher voltage levels are quite impressive in the size of the arcs they generate.
