Post subject:  Arc Flash Animation - Feedback Requested
We are creating an animated course explaining what arc flash is and its dangers. We are currently considering the best way to show the basic concept of an arc flash. The animation will accompany the following description:

When energized equipment is working correctly, the electric current flows in a very controlled, precise path. When something causes an electric current to go off of its normal path and into the air, energy is released. This energy instantly superheats the air and any nearby components, which causes an explosion. This chain of events is known as an arc flash.


Here is a picture showing what the animation might show. We are unsure if we are showing a good conceptual understanding of arc flash. Any feedback obviously greatly appreciated. Also feel free to send me private messages if you want.

The picture is a little confusing to me, is the yellow dotted line a cable running to a load? How does the tool cause an arc flash?

I think you should focus on where your trainees are most likely to work near energized parts, for example inside switchgear that hasn't been fully de-energized. A tool making contact between bare busbars and the grounded enclosure. Maybe make the picture look inside the switchgear, with a de-energized working area and live busbars running below. This should make it clear that it can happen close to where you are working, even if you're not touching live parts yourself.
