I work for a crown corporation as a Power Systems Electrician, we are a power utility, almost all our our switchgears have no warning labels on them, labels that have the catagory arc flash hazard, shock hazard, workind distance, etc, etc.. you know the labels you see before you rack out a breaker or looking/working into a lighting panel, well my employer and Safety department trying to force us Electrician to install these particular labels that from provided by a company that did the arc flash study onto the particular equipment, and teach the operator on how to read the labels, so that the plant operators can understand the warning labels, but we have to sign off on a document that says we did provide the training to the operators, that is what Im scared to do, sign a document that states a power plant operator now knows what the label means and what PPE to use. I have no issue explaing to the operator what the label means, just not liking I have to sign a document stating i did provide the traing, is the procedures to follow in regards to installing warning labels on electrical equipment?

Regards

A common concern by almost every one due to liability. Check out this week's Question of the Week (near top of forum). I have been hearing this type of question more and more and have had a few recent discussions with many people. Good Luck!

Hello. Greetings from North of the border. I am surprised that the company who performed the AFRA is not installing the labels? This is normally part of the PO when the job was granted to them. It owuld make sense that their people would do the installation of the labels as they would be familiar with the location of your panels and switchgear just from the SLD (single line diagram) alone. If you do end up installing the labels- whicjh I would personally refuse, who is verifying that they have been correctly installed on the corresponding equipment?

Training is a whole other challenge. The number of fellow electricians that I meet up here in Canada in which their company has completed the assessment however no one know how to interpret the information on the label (boundaries, etc). The company who performed the assessment could perform the training to operators provided that they have someone in-house capable of doing this. Better would be someone from your organization to conduct the training however I would suggest that that this training be part of the training on your in-house electrical safety program

Hope that this is of some help

Best regards

Len
