I am a consulting engineer. I have been working on arc flash studies since 2009 among my other duties. I mostly work for electric utilities, 15kV and up. For the past five years I have been performing arc flash analysis for entities at 1000 volts and below along with the higher voltages. I follow this forum when I can. We have been struggling at our firm about what we need to do for policies. I have given several lectures and safety training/awareness as it relates to arc flash. Both inhouse and to our clients. Our safety manager is currently writing new policies for our company. He wanted me ask if their is a certification available for those who train arc flash. Since this topic is fairly new in the electric utility field, I do not think that there is. Does anyone know? If there is, he would like be to be certified. If so, does anyone know how I would proceed with that?

I don't believe there is any specific arc flash training certification. I am only aware of one program which is CUSP, Certified Utility Safety Professional, which geared for utility safety professionals

For those instances covered by the scope of NFPA 70e the NFPA has the following certifications:
Certified Electrical Safety Compliance Professional (CESCP)
Certified Electrical Safety Technician (CEST)

Hello BuggyBrent

Greetings from North of the Border. as previously stated by the others, there is no "Certified Trainer" When it comes to Electrical Safety in the Workplace", for both NFPA 70E or CSA Z462. Here in Canada we have allot of want- a be's, who know nothing about electricity let alone electrical safety. For myself I completed the CESCP and CESW through NFPA. You can discover certification requirements from the NFPA web site. This would be my recommendation as at least it will not only give you some increase knowledge but perhaps more credability. Also Jim's couses are excellent! I have taken several of them over the years. If time permits for you, a consideration of the upcoming ESW- Electrical Safety Workshops in Jacksonville Fla.

Don't forget "high voltage training" required for Saskatchewan only, or the odd 35 V "extra" low voltage rule in some of the Eastern provinces that makes a POE Ethernet port a shock hazard.

Here in Washington State, they have an electrical training certification process. Both the class and instructor must be pre-approved by the State Labor and Industries organization. If the instructor and class are approved then licensed electricians can receive CEUs for the class. This tends to insure that only experienced instructors can teach these classes. We currently have two State of Washington approved instructors on staff. E-Hazard's LV and HV classes are currently approved by the state.
