Post subject:  <1kV contact voltage detector self test function

For verifying the absence of voltage for Low Voltage (1kV and below), we require a contact voltage detector along with the use of a Proving Unit to functionally test the detector prior to and after verifying the absence of voltage. The proving unit provides a known voltage source of 240V and eliminates the need to locate a known voltage source, which sometimes requires the removal of an energized panel cover to access the known source.

I am now seeing voltage detectors being manufactured with a built-in self test feature. My questions are: Is the self-test a suitable way to functionally test a voltage detector or is this only testing the internal circuitry of the detector? In other words, does the self-test satisfy the requirement for a "Known Voltage Source" in NFPA 70E-2018?

We require using a test touch as proximity is not allowed. We also test before and after touching with a known source.

Hi GL

When you mention about the "voltage detectors being manufactured with a built-in self test feature". Are you referencing where in 70E it discusses the "Permanent Electrical Safety Device" PESD? I am thinking of the Panduit device that mounts on the door of a panel and runs through its own diagnostics for the presence and absence of voltage? Or are you referencing a multimeeter style device or contact testing device? Not sure how a contact type tester would be able to do a self check without applying on a known energized source

In the "old days" of the glow stick and related devices, it was always utility practice to test the integrity before and after on MV and HV circuits.
Regardless of the type test device, I still subscribe to the this philosophy.

I agree with Jim - test before and after on a known source.

Self-test does not replace, only verifies that the unit is working.

Can you provide a make/model for an example detector?

Can the manufacturer provide assurance that there can be no common failure mode between the source and detection sides of the instrument? The separate Proving Unit will not have share a failure mode with the detector that would cause a false indication.
