At one time or another, you've likely wondered how the heck did this company come up with their electrical labeling? I certainly have. Is there a labeling convention the electrical engineers use that I don't know about or does each engineer invent his own method? I've seen labeling from simple numbers for each panel to complex methods that are based on floor level, emergency or normal, UPS power - well the list is long. Does anyone have a logical labeling system?

NFPA 70E sec. 130.5H and NEMA Z535 both have standards for labels. I guess it's up to the designer about the order of some of those things?

What I was asking is using a specific sort of lettering, not style or size or color, but actual letter and numbering to identify panels etc.

I have not seen a standard but doesn't mean there isn't something out there. I have seen labeling where the panel is identified by the physical location such as I beam and floor, just using the alphabet, etc.

Hi wilhendrix, I think Electrical Labeling Practices are very different and there is no common convention. Some use industry standards, while others create their own systems based on specific needs.
