I am curious if anyone here does arc flash studies for a college campus? I work for large university and my group maintains over 200 individual studies of our campus buildings. We do all the field work, field 1-line drawings, SKM and labeling in-house. We review the studies and re-label on a 5 year cycle or as changes are made to the electrical systems. How do other college campuses handle arc flash studies?

I used to be the campus EE for a MAC conference school of about 19 000 students. Roughly about 60 large buildings and a bunch of houses and houses converted to offices etc.

The team consisted of me, when I had time. I did all the data collection, modeling and labeling. I got help from the Electric shop when it took 2 people to safely remove covers or access vaults and the like. For new buildings or major remodels I put it in the consultants scope to do the studies, stipulated the could not offload it to the contractor and required they turn over the SKM model to me when done.

There is a Big Ten school in my state that may or may not have alumni like me, Drew Brees and Neil Armstrong that has a full time team of folks dedicated to power studies and arc flash labeling. Or at least they did a few years ago when I last spoke to them about it.

Looks like they haven't updated the standards since I left.

I will also add I had student workers pull and make copies of all the one lines, power plans, shop drawings/submittals for all the gear and generators for every building including all the renovations over the years. When I was ready to model a building I would take that info and build the model before doing data collection. Since we had good records the models would be pretty accurate before I surveyed. That saved a bunch of time.

I worked on this task off and on for a few years but didn't complete it although I came fairly close on the initial models.

I left before the 5 year updates needed to happen.

I just noticed your name and believe you know very well where the Big Ten school is of which I spoke, lol. In fact, I believe I met you maybe like 7 or 8 years ago or thereabouts on your campus.

Perform all field data collection internally. Maintain one-lines, SKM/ETAP models, and labels in-house. Re-study on a 5-year cycle or after system modifications. This works well when there’s dedicated electrical engineering staff and strong documentation control. best sex dolls

This reminds me of a situation I run into, where I'm "updating" a previous study done by another firm. How confident can you be with someone else's gathered data, and what is your procedure for doing updates on someone else's work? I ask because I frequently find a lot of discrepancies between what I find in the field and what the previous firm presented as data. Things like gross guesstimates on wire length (calling 1/3 of the cable lengths in the building 100', when the actual length can vary by 50%, incorrect breakers, etc).

I understand the situation you mentioned above was different, with well-maintained records and whatnot.
