Does anyone know the number of arc flash accidents per year? I’m looking for data relative to heavy industry not transmission or distribution. Does anyone know of any accidents where the prescribed arc flash PPE did not provide adequate protection? Thank you |

Thank you This is a few years old but from USBLS, 2,000 arc flash victims each year are sent to burn centers. I know that dosent answer your actual question but no one knows the answer to that. What maybe 10% of arc flash "accidents" get reported? I have some reports on lack of PPE, in fact the famous arc flash security camera video is a good example, they were all wearing PPE, just not enough. Both OSHA and BLS websites have all sorts of acident data, but they are not simple answers, mostly just based on fatalities. |

Like Zog said, it's hard data to come by for current years. For a historical perspective there's a NIOSH paper by James Cawley and Gerald Homce titled "Trends in Electrical Injury in the U.S. - 1992-2002" that has some interesting data in it. You can probably google it to find it. Much of their data comes from BLS and I recall finding some data on their site when I went looking one time. Good Luck and let us know if you find anything good. |
