In the preamble for the new regs, Page 20501, OSHA discusses properly maintaining FR and AR PPE. Several statements are made that employers should be aware of:

1. the responsibility for maintaining PPE rests squarely with the employer under existing OSHA standards. No change there.
2. If employers rely on home laundering of the clothing, they must train their employees in proper laundering procedures and techniques, and employers must inspect the clothing on a regular basis to ensure that it is not in need of repair or replacement."

Quality FRC suppliers can help companies understand the final ruling’s impact and how to properly protect their employees. Important points from OSHA’s updated standard include:

1. The final rule does not require employers to launder protective clothing for employees. Employers may choose to launder PPE for their employees, but the cost of laundering is not imposed on the employer.
2. In general, employees can follow the manufacturers’ home care instructions and should expect no additional cost to employees over that of laundering non-FR clothing.
3. Whether employers take advantage of the convenience and cost effectiveness of home laundry or choose to pay for industrial laundering:
3a. Employers must train their employees in proper laundering procedures, and
3b. Employers must inspect the clothing on a regular basis to ensure that it is not in need of repair or replacement.

This training video, which has been reviewed by the industry's foremost experts, provides guidance for both employers and employees on best practices for maintenance and inspection of FR and arc-rated clothing. Click here to access: https://www.research.net/s/PLJZ6XS.
