When frequent access to network equipment or controls is needed, knowing and understanding ways to reduce the risk of exposure to an arc flash is crucial to employee safety and keeping the network operating.

With today’s dependence on industrial networking and automation equipment, that sometimes requires frequent interaction with network equipment inside panels that also contain high voltage, the risk of an arc flash can be significant.

Distributed I/O
While there is no solution that can completely eliminate the risk of arc flash hazards, there are ways to minimize engineer, technicians and maintenance workers’ exposure to arc flash. For example, there is a potential for an arc flash any time the electrical enclosure is opened. Taking network I/O equipment out of the electrical enclosure and mounting it in a separate panel minimizes the risk of a network technician's exposure to arc flash.
