Post subject:  Maintenance Settings
As part of the results of an arc flash study, have you begun recommending or implementing “temporary” maintenance settings anywhere to reduce the incident energy while energized work is being performed?

Didn't mean for it to. Just meant temporarily change IP from Hi to Low or similar setting change.

Many use this (at least as a recommendation) but a surprising number do not since they do not want to complicate procedures and / or leave this up to others to lower and then remember to restore the original setting.

Exactly, which is why I don't recommend maintenence settings. Using a maintenence switch allows for control when you have a padlockable switch.

Procedure is then simplified, usually a second label is used for PPE requirements when system is enabled.

Have not done this because it remains a customer choice and my customers have not chosen this.

Greatest concern is a nuisance trip because the switch might inadvertently be left in maintenance mode.

It will typically confuse the client and we should avoid complication in safe work practices, however sometimes it is necessary, for instance when HRC is 4, client might prefer to bring down the HRC via adjusting settings than to wear a category 4 suit

On the utility side we combine an instantaneous setting with non-reclose. Easy to do with microprocessor relays, and we have been doing so well before arc flash requirements came to the NESC. No extra training needed since reclosing is routinely disabled during hot line work and re-enabled after.

Report recommendations

We report busses that have IE greater than Category 3 and where static trip breakers exist, we recommend the use of maintenance settings.
