Do you post arc flash warning labels on transformers that can be tested or serviced while energized?

No, we do not label transformers - yet. In our standard we say if it's not labeled, and greater than 240V, don't open it unless it's an emergency, then use the tables. |

Electrical Lead Emergencies cause death. Don't open unless you have the proper PPE or your utility has disconnected the primary and grounded the mains. Arc Flash is a real hazard, especially at a transformer (VERY HIGH INCIDENT ENERGY). Label them and follow the boundaries for you and all of your employees' safety. |

Even if it is a transformer that can be tested or serviced while energized, it couldn't hurt to put an arc flash warning label on it. You want to minimize the potential for a dangerous situation as much as possible. Especially in an emergency, there might not be enough time for someone to stop and think before they act. They need as much information readily available as possible. |

For argument's sake, if I were to do an arc flash calculation for an 13.8kV/600V/347V Transformer. Would it be OK to assume: XFMR Primary 13.8kV: 152mm Bus Gap, x-factor of 0.973, working distance of 910mm (treating as 15kV SWGR)?? XFMR Secondary 600V: 32mm Bus Gap; x-factor of 1.473, working distance of 610mm (treating as LV SWGR)?? |

Since the transformer buses are modeled in the software, we post the worst-case label on the transformer. |

If The transformer is not a typical pole-top distruibution panel, it shoukd be labeled as it is "energerized until proven deenergized". Any pad-mount transformer caould have energized leads and the worker may be intending to change taps witha hot-stick. In this case he would need to know the Arc Flash protection boundary, so he can use the proper length pole. |
