Do you have or have access to IEEE Standard 1584 - IEEE Guide for Performing Arc-Flash Hazard Calculations?

Here's a question back to you regarding IEEE 1584 access:

Hi Jim,

For the analysis/modeler who is busy in this field 50% or more of their time, would you (a) say the modeler is throwing caution to the wind by not having access, or (b) highly recommend having access to IEEE 1584 for information you need and can't get elsewhere, (c) suggest it but say the available body of knowledge, the likes of arcflashforum, should be enough to keep one out of trouble?

My view is it is always best to be armed with as much information as possible. The forum does contain a lot of good info - great bunch of contributors all pitching in. The IEEE equations are in the back of NFPA 70E and there are many other good references - a few that I even wrote.

I bought a copy from IEEE, but I must attest that I was shocked by the price tag, even as a member.

I agree. Thank goodness my employer bought it. The cost is insane.

I made the decision to drop my IEEE membership this year. The price tag is just getting ridiculous, and I can no longer in good conscious support that high a fee structure. Yes, my employer will reimburse me, but that's not the point. The fee has become unreasonable and I won't support it out of principle.
