Some of the first arc flash studies were performed before IEEE 1584 was first published in 2002 using tables and/or published articles that were available.
The 1995 Edition of NFPA 70E first introduced the term “Arc Flash” and the 2000 Edition introduced the Arc Flash Boundary (Flash Protection Boundary) as well as PPE Tables (HRC back then) 2004 Edition of NFPA 70E first acknowledged the use of IEEE 1584.
When was the first time you (or consultant) performed an arc flash study?
Before 2000 (when?) 2000 – 2004 2004 – 2009 2009 – 2012 After 2012 Does not apply

I helped develop my first arc flash model in ETAP when I was a co-op student back in the summer of 2004. I really had no idea what I was doing, and there was only one engineer in the office that really had an idea what it was trying to achieve.
The study was for a local university when they were completing an upgrade to one of their pieces of 600V switchgear.
