Post subject: | Arc flash protection- forklift battery connecting / charger |
Hello, I did not see this noted in the forum. I am an EHS Administrator / Interim safety manager at a brewery. We recently had an incident where a worker was almost burned when an arc flash occurred while he was unhooking a forklift charging cable (for a lead acid battery) from a cable connecting to a battery charger. For added piece of mind, improving the PPE (gloves ony) for the operators is a current focus. The operators gloves melted a bit and his hands were covered with some dark from the burnt gloves. My choice for gloves would be leather but am wondering if shock protection needs to be added to the glove PPE requirements. Are there any suggestions for gloves to get for this need? Thanks in advance, Everett. |

We require our workers to wear non-melting gloves. We also issue arc rated work gloves that are also cut and puncture resistant. These are not very expensive in quantity. The gloves we use are very similar to this: https://www.grainger.com/product/36VP85 ... 3:20501231 On another note, the charger should always be off when connecting or disconnecting forklift batteries. This prevents arcing.
