Post subject:  400Hz Question

Folks;

Quick search of the site revealed several posts regarding 400Hz but none of the answers appeared to show how companies are dealing with the arc flash hazards with 400Hz systems.

I am working with a 450V, 400Hz system and I would like the opinion of the folks on this site on how to quantify the arc flash hazard. I do realize that IEEE 1584 and NFPA 70E deal with 50-60Hz only. Has any testing been done with 400Hz systems, either published or unpublished?

Thanks in advance for any insight that can be offered.

I have not seen or heard of anything either and judging by the responses (or lack of) there might not be much out there. If anyone has any info, it would greatly appreciated.

Jim / Brainfiller, do you know if IEEE 1584 is looking at this?

No, not at this time. I don't know if there is any independent research out there. I have not heard of any.

450VAC 400Hz Aircraft handling system is the system I am working on. Though 20 some odd years ago, when I was technician, computer data centers utilized 400Hz, I am not sure if they still do though.

Working on C-141 cargo aircraft years ago I can tell you there is a considerable voltage drop in 400hz systems due to the reactance in cables and wires as distance increases. Long cable runs on aircraft aren't usually a problem. 400hz is used in aircraft systems because the equipment such as power supplies, motors, etc. can be smaller thus saving weight. I would think (no proof) that at 400hz the incident energy would be higher than at 60hz. :confused:
