What is the lifespan of a arc flash suit?

If the arc rated PPE is kept clean, it will depend on the number of and type of launderings. As a general rule of thumb, a large percentage of PPE manufacturers put a limit on the number of launderings to 60-80. I am limiting my comment to Category #2 PPE. Category #4 will vary, in that case, consult the mfg.

There is no standard requirement on replacement of Arc Flash Suits. ASTM F18 is working on a standard and it could include recommendations on replacement.

The best advice we have seen to date is following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Face shield manufacturers typically indicate that they should be replaced when the shield becomes scarred or in about 2-5 years depending on how they are stored and cared for.
Hard hat suspensions are to be replaced every year and the hard hat 2-5 years depending on the manufacturer's recommendations.

Fire fighter's turnout gear gets replaced every 10 years but it is exposed to fire on a regular basis. We have tested used arc flash suits and not seen failures. The washing frequency is VERY low (if they are washed at all) in most plants.

We recommend washing periodically to remove any flammable contaminants but done hood designs make washing difficult.

The 10 year rule is reasonable but many will last much longer than that.
