So......NFPA 70E states the limited approach boundary for 120VAC is "avoid contact"
Does that mean I can use a multimeter without voltage-rated gloves if I don't touch the energized 120VAC device with my body.....or is my meter "contacting" it.....thus requiring shock protection gear?

My opinion is that voltage rated gloves are not required for this work, since you'll have rated voltage probes as your means to "avoid contact".

I agree with you.....and have previously seen this as avoiding contact with anything. I see it now as avoiding contact with my skin.......or anything else that does not include shock protection

We have always told our Electricians that as long as the test leads were equipped with "shoulders" that would not allow your fingers to inadvertently slip forward onto the probes, you did not need voltage rated gloves. This obviously only applies to the "avoid contact" column.
