I'm looking for any references/articles/papers/reports regarding testing and/or actual accident experience with cat2 face shields with and without chin extensions (also called chin cup, chin guard, chin piece, chin protector).

Most of the PPE providers appear to have dropped the ones without the chin piece (they might still make it, but it doesn't appear in many catalogues). I'd like some references to any sort of articles or data about differences in performance. It seems to me that if everyone's using it, there must be a reason other than it looks like the right thing to do (I don't doubt that it is, please help me with providing references to authoritative justification).

Nothing I know of actually requires the chin cup, although I have seen face sheilds with dual ratings foir using the chin cup or not.The arc testing with facesheilds I have seen illistrates how easily the arc can "roll up" the body and burn the face, and of course the angle of the head relitive to the arc is a huge factor.

Hugh Hoagland, who developed the face sheilds we all use today, has done extensive research on this and may have some test data to share with you. His view on the chin cup if I recall is it is "highly recommended".
