The long awaited IEEE 1584.1 - IEEE Guide for the Specification of Scope and Deliverable Requirements for an Arc-Flash Hazard Calculations Study in Accordance with IEEE Std 1584 is now available from IEEE. You can order it here:

This document defines the recommended minimum guidelines for performing a detailed arc-flash hazard
calculation study (arc-flash study) based on IEEE Std 1584™. Use of this document should enable persons
such as facility owners, contractors, equipment manufacturers, operations, safety, and electrical personnel
as well as those responsible for the specification and/or the performance of the study to understand the minimum scope of work and deliverables required. Additionally, by providing a detailed list of deliverable
items, accurate proposals can be obtained.

It was the hard work of many people to bring this document to completion. My colleague and friend, Ken Jones and I wrote the first draft in Dallas, Texas in 2008 but it took the IEEE 1584 Working Group to provide the many comments, input and suggestions until it reached its final form. Thanks to everyone on the IEEE 1584 Working Group and especially the IEEE 1584 leadership that helped us navigate the long and drawn out process of getting this standard to the finish line.


Note: This standard is 1584.1 (dot one) and not the main IEEE 1584 - IEEE Guide for Arc-Flash Hazard Calculations Standard which is presently under revision.

I can only imagine the extreme hard work by your committee that went into this document. I will definitely be getting a copy as it is much needed up here in the frozen North- Canada

Very exciting. I'm looking forward to the applying the standards of the IEEE 1584 working group to future reports. Thanks for the hard work!

Jim,
i have checked to purchase the new standard.
So seems that are only 27 pages and looks like strange...

does it is the new standard? It contains really a new method? Does this impact the results?
Because my boss ask me, be sure that this impact really the results, i don't want to spend money otherwise...

Or someone can suggest where purchase it!

Giovanni, this is 1584.1 which provided guidelines on performing a study not how to (ie formulas). IEEE 1584-2002 is still the document that has the methods and new version based on more testing has not been released yet.

The next edition of IEEE 1584 is a few years away yet. We are presently evaluating a new model for the next edition and there is also still some testing going on such as with actual equipment.
