In a previous post I advised that their will be significant technical changes and we will be deviating from NFPA 70E.

I will be providing more information in the near future.

Some of the changes are positive and some negative in my opinion for employers in Canada.

Some of the changes will be used with misinformation/disinformation to push companies to complete arc flash hazard incident energy analysis studies, claiiming the arc flash PPE category method is not longer valid.

I will be as diligent as I can be to call out those that misinformation or disinform as a marketing tactic.

A lot of myths out there with respect to arc flash.

Implementing a compliant Electrical Safety Program places the employer in control of the narrative by completing a documented work task based risk assessment procedure.

Hi Terry,

Can I ask what some of these misinformation/disinformation consist of? Because if it's happening north of the border then there's very little doubt it's also happening south of the border in the US.

There is a 100s it seems of qualified and competent NFPA 70E "certified" trainers out there.

As well tens of thousands for consulting firms doing arc flash studies just in the USA since 2005.

Vendor sell HRC 2 and 4 and now CAT 2 and CAT 4 kits which has no definition in 70E when incident energy analysis is completed.

The 40 cal myth and arc blast pressure so high it will pulverize the worker is still out there.

There are 30,000 arc flash incidents in the USA everyday.

There is an arc flash fatality everyday in the USA.

The employer controls the narrative with a compliant Electrical Safety Program and the employer stipulates the arc flash and shock equipment label NOT the consultant.

I have reviewed 1000s of non-compliant installed arc flash and shock equipment labels in 15 years.

All this doesn't help the Qualified Person who we need to complete energized work or isolation of electrical equipment.

In Canada there are two training organizations with significant marketing reach and cheap and their training is non compliant to CSA Z462 yet they market that it is. Sad for anyone who attendees this training. Nothing handed out but a PPT, no other training materials provided, no review of how to apply CSA Z462 and the training in the field.
