How do VFD's with bypasses operate in the event of a fault i.e. are they regenerative or only allow fault currents to flow from line side to load side?

In bypass mode, the short circuit motor contribution can backfeed through the bypass back to the rest of the power system. Does it operate in bypass often? Probably not, but it is a good "what if" to consider a case with it directly connected.
