En casi todas las clases de capacitaci\u00f3n sobre seguridad el\u00e9ctrica y NFPA 70E que imparto, pregunto al grupo \u201ccu\u00e1ntos de ustedes NUNCA han experimentado una descarga el\u00e9ctrica\u201d. Todav\u00eda no he visto a nadie levantar la mano. En el \u201cmundo moderno\u201d actual, la electricidad es parte de la vida diaria y, como consecuencia, una descarga el\u00e9ctrica puede sucederle a cualquiera, \u00a1incluso a m\u00ed!<\/p><p><strong>#@&amp;%!!<\/strong> No puedo creer que haya hecho eso. Una tarde, mientras cortaba el seto de mi casa, mov\u00ed el cable alargador naranja alrededor de uno de los arbustos. Es muy sencillo: como soy una persona muy consciente de la seguridad, quer\u00eda asegurarme de no cortarlo accidentalmente. Cuando agarr\u00e9 el cable, sent\u00ed una sorpresa inesperada. El doloroso zumbido en mi mano lo dec\u00eda todo. Acababa de recibir una descarga el\u00e9ctrica. Esto no se supon\u00eda que me pasara a m\u00ed. Ense\u00f1o a la gente a no recibir descargas el\u00e9ctricas.<\/p><p>Este fue un recordatorio no tan sutil de lo f\u00e1cil que puede ocurrir este evento potencialmente mortal. Desconcertado sobre por qu\u00e9 sucedi\u00f3, se hizo evidente cuando mir\u00e9 el cable, algo que deber\u00eda haber hecho primero. Efectivamente, hab\u00eda una peque\u00f1a muesca en el aislamiento naranja que revelaba un punto brillante muy peque\u00f1o: \u00a1el conductor expuesto!<\/p><h2><strong>\u00bfCon qu\u00e9 frecuencia?<\/strong><\/h2><p>Empec\u00e9 a preguntarme cu\u00e1ntas personas m\u00e1s hab\u00edan sufrido una descarga el\u00e9ctrica. Record\u00e9 una estad\u00edstica que se encuentra en el Anexo informativo K.2 de la norma NFPA 70E sobre descargas el\u00e9ctricas que dice: \u201cCada a\u00f1o ocurren aproximadamente 30 000 accidentes no fatales por descargas el\u00e9ctricas\u201d. Siempre me pareci\u00f3 una cifra elevada y ahora s\u00e9 por qu\u00e9.<\/p><p>Investigando un poco m\u00e1s, decid\u00ed hacer una encuesta a un grupo relacionado con sistemas de energ\u00eda el\u00e9ctrica y seguridad el\u00e9ctrica. La pregunta era: \u201c\u00bfAlguna vez ha recibido una descarga el\u00e9ctrica?\u201d Supuse, bas\u00e1ndome en la cifra de la NPFA, que habr\u00eda un porcentaje relativamente alto de personas que la hab\u00edan recibido. Sin embargo, los resultados fueron m\u00e1s sorprendentes. De un grupo de alrededor de 100 personas, todos los encuestados indicaron que hab\u00edan recibido una descarga el\u00e9ctrica antes: el 100 por ciento. Se hizo una pregunta de seguimiento: \u201c\u00bfCu\u00e1ntas veces ha recibido una descarga el\u00e9ctrica?\u201d M\u00e1s de la mitad respondi\u00f3: \u201cM\u00e1s de las que puedo recordar\u201d. Aunque las pr\u00e1cticas de seguridad el\u00e9ctrica han mejorado mucho con el paso de los a\u00f1os, las descargas el\u00e9ctricas potencialmente mortales todav\u00eda ocurren.<\/p><h3><strong>\u00bfLo que sucede?<\/strong><\/h3><p>Gran parte de lo que se sabe hoy sobre los efectos de las descargas el\u00e9ctricas en el cuerpo humano se remonta a las investigaciones realizadas por personas como Charles Dalziel. Su trabajo a finales de la d\u00e9cada de 1940 y principios de la de 1950, as\u00ed como su art\u00edculo de referencia de 1961 \u201cEfectos nocivos de las descargas el\u00e9ctricas\u201d, ayudaron a definir los niveles de corriente que pueden producir ciertas respuestas fisiol\u00f3gicas en el cuerpo. Esto ayud\u00f3 a allanar el camino para el desarrollo del interruptor de circuito por falla a tierra (GFCI), que se utiliza para proteger a las personas de los peligros de las descargas el\u00e9ctricas.<\/p><h2><strong>Protecci\u00f3n GFCI<\/strong><\/h2><p>Un dispositivo GFCI est\u00e1 dise\u00f1ado para funcionar cuando detecta un desequilibrio en la corriente que fluye por los conductores de fase y neutro de un circuito el\u00e9ctrico. Ambos conductores pasan por un transformador sensor y, si fluye m\u00e1s corriente por un conductor que por el otro, es probable que se deba a que la \u201ccorriente faltante\u201d est\u00e1 tomando un camino alternativo, tal vez a trav\u00e9s de una persona. El dispositivo responde dispar\u00e1ndose instant\u00e1neamente para interrumpir el circuito potencialmente mortal.<\/p><p>Seg\u00fan el C\u00f3digo El\u00e9ctrico Nacional, un GFCI se define como &quot;un dispositivo destinado a la protecci\u00f3n del personal que funciona para desenergizar un circuito o parte del mismo dentro de un per\u00edodo de tiempo establecido cuando una corriente a tierra excede los valores establecidos para un dispositivo de Clase A. En una nota informativa, el GFCI de Clase A debe dispararse cuando la corriente a tierra es de 6 miliamperios (mA) o m\u00e1s y no debe dispararse cuando la corriente es inferior a 4 mA.<\/p><p>La primera menci\u00f3n de la protecci\u00f3n GFCI en el C\u00f3digo El\u00e9ctrico Nacional se produjo en la edici\u00f3n de 1968. A lo largo de los a\u00f1os, los requisitos de protecci\u00f3n GFCI se han ampliado en casi todas las revisiones del NEC desde entonces. El requisito de protecci\u00f3n GFCI para los recept\u00e1culos de garaje se introdujo por primera vez en la edici\u00f3n de 1978 (unos a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s de que se construyera mi casa).<\/p><p>La edici\u00f3n 2012 de la norma NFPA 70E se ampli\u00f3 para incluir texto adicional sobre la protecci\u00f3n mediante GFCI. Se agregaron las secciones 110.4(C) (1) y (2), que exigen el uso de protecci\u00f3n mediante GFCI cuando as\u00ed lo exijan los c\u00f3digos y normas estatales, federales o locales aplicables. Adem\u00e1s, se deber\u00e1 proporcionar protecci\u00f3n mediante GFCI cuando un empleado est\u00e9 al aire libre y opere o utilice equipos conectados por cable y enchufe alimentados por circuitos de 125 voltios y 15, 20 o 30 amperios. Como siempre, cada nueva edici\u00f3n de la norma NFPA 70E trae consigo pr\u00e1cticas de seguridad el\u00e9ctrica que mejoran continuamente.<\/p><h2><strong>Segunda y tercera oportunidad<\/strong><\/h2><p>Es un dicho com\u00fan: no siempre hay una segunda oportunidad cuando se cometen errores relacionados con la electricidad. Aunque mi &quot;error&quot; fue menor, r\u00e1pidamente me llev\u00f3 a comprar un nuevo cable de extensi\u00f3n y a agregar protecci\u00f3n GFCI al circuito del garaje.
