Is that true?<\/p><p><strong>Short answer:<\/strong><br \/><strong>No!<\/strong> An arc flash can absolutely last longer than two seconds. Neither IEEE 1584 nor NFPA 70E says an arc flash is physically limited to two seconds. The two-second value is an <strong>assumption used for exposure time<\/strong>, not a limit on how long an arc can actually exist.<\/p><p>This misunderstanding comes from a statement in <strong>IEEE 1584-2018<\/strong>, which says that <em>\u201c2 seconds usually is a reasonable assumption for the arc duration.\u201d<\/em> That sentence gets quoted a lot, but it\u2019s often taken out of context.<\/p><p>What IEEE 1584 is really addressing is <strong>how long to assume a worker is exposed to the arc<\/strong>, not how long the arc itself can physically exist.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e7c7637 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e7c7637\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What the 2-Second Assumption Actually Means<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a7a8dfb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a7a8dfb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In an arc-flash study, arc duration is normally based on <strong>protective device clearing time<\/strong>\u2014how long it takes a breaker, relay, or fuse to detect the fault and open the circuit. In some systems, especially where protective devices are slow or coordination is poor, that clearing time can exceed two seconds.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/brainfiller.com\/es\/technical-articles\/nfpa-70e-and-arc-flash-calculations-above-15-kv\/\">IEEE 1584<\/a> permits the arc duration to be <strong>capped at 2 seconds for calculation purposes<\/strong> <em>only<\/em> when it is reasonable to assume that a person can move out of the arc-flash exposure area. In other words:<\/p><ul><li>The arc may still be burning<\/li><li>The equipment may still be energized<\/li><li>But the <strong>worker is assumed to no longer be in front of it<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Two seconds represents <strong>human reaction and escape time<\/strong>, not a physical limit on arc duration. If there is a \u201cboom\u201d, we go into the fight or flight response and in this case, flight is the normal response, jumping out of the way.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bd61618 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"bd61618\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Arc Flashes Can Last Much Longer<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2f5397b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2f5397b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The actual arc duration is generally unpredictable and is a function of many factors such as <a href=\"https:\/\/brainfiller.com\/es\/nfpa-70e\/arcing-fault-current-nfpa70e\/\">arcing current<\/a>, electrode gap, voltage and much more.\u00a0 That is why the protective device clearing time is used \u2013 a known value.\u00a0<\/p><p>In real-world conditions, an arc flash can potentially last:<\/p><ul><li>Several seconds<\/li><li>Tens of seconds<\/li><li>Or until the equipment fails catastrophically or the power source is removed<\/li><\/ul><p>This is especially true in systems with:<\/p><ul><li>Failed or miscoordinated protection<\/li><li>Low arcing fault current resulting in protection having a long response time<\/li><li>Utility-fed equipment without fast local protection \u2013 only the upstream utility device.<\/li><\/ul><p>You don\u2019t have to dig very deep on YouTube to see videos of some very long duration arc flash events.<\/p><p>That\u2019s why it\u2019s incorrect\u2014and dangerous\u2014to think of two seconds as a hard limit.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e1aa54b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e1aa54b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How NFPA 70E Uses the Same Concept<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3c536a6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3c536a6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>NFPA 70E also references the <strong>two-second arc duration assumption<\/strong> in specific locations.<\/p><p>As an example, <strong>NFPA 70E Table 130.7(C)(15)(b)<\/strong>, which provides <strong>arc-flash PPE categories for dc systems<\/strong>.<\/p><p><strong>Nota informativa 2<\/strong> to this table states that <em>a two-second arc duration is assumed if there is no overcurrent protective device to limit the duration of the arc.<\/em><\/p><p>This language is often misunderstood. It does <strong>no<\/strong> mean:<\/p><ul><li>The arc will self-extinguish after two seconds<\/li><li>dc arc flashes are limited to two seconds<\/li><li>Two seconds is inherently safe<\/li><\/ul><p>What it means is that, <strong>for PPE category guidance<\/strong>, NFPA 70E assumes a two-second exposure duration when no overcurrent protective device exists to clear the fault. Often dc systems involve battery systems such as in uninterruptable power supplies (UPS) which often will not have overcurrent protection \u2013 <br \/><strong><br \/>Caution! \u2013 technical humor follows.<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m sure this lack of protection has something to do with the \u201cU\u201d in the title \u2013 Uninterruptable.<\/p><p>NFPA 70E\u2019s two-second assumption in Table 130.7(C)(15)(b) is a <strong>conservative exposure assumption<\/strong>, not a statement about arc behavior. Similar to ac arcs, a dc arc can potentially continue well beyond two seconds. \u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-75c0619 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"75c0619\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Engineering Judgment Is Required<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7c711d8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7c711d8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The 2-second cap should only be used when it is realistic that a worker could recognize the event and physically move away.<\/p><p>Examples where the 2-second assumption may be reasonable:<\/p><ul><li>Standing in front of open, accessible equipment<\/li><li>No physical restraints or confined space<\/li><li>Clear escape path<\/li><\/ul><p>Examples where it may <strong>no<\/strong> be reasonable:<\/p><ul><li>Working in a bucket truck<\/li><li>Working on electrical equipment in enclosed spaces<\/li><li>Similar situations that may restrict the worker\u2019s ability to rapidly move away<\/li><\/ul><p>If a worker cannot reasonably move away, then <strong>the actual protective device clearing time should be used<\/strong>, even if it exceeds two seconds.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c5be7bc elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c5be7bc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Bottom Line<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c6c4b70 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c6c4b70\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The 2-second value in IEEE 1584:<\/p><ul><li>Is <strong>not a limit on arc duration<\/strong><\/li><li>Is <strong>not a guarantee of safety<\/strong><\/li><li>Is <strong>not automatic<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>It is a calculation assumption based on human response, and it should only be applied when justified. Used correctly, it helps prevent unrealistic <a href=\"https:\/\/brainfiller.com\/es\/technical-articles\/arc-flash-boundary-nfpa70e\/\">energ\u00eda incidente<\/a> values.
