Once you go above 15 kV, IEEE 1584 is <strong>outside its range of validity<\/strong> and should <strong>no<\/strong> be used to calculate incident energy if you want to remain technically defensible when conducting an arc flash risk assessment in accordance with NFPA 70E Article 130.5.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3b9dbd4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3b9dbd4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">NFPA 70E Arc-Flash PPE Selection Options<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aa39450 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"aa39450\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>NFPA 70E Article 130.5 allows <strong>two methods<\/strong> for selecting arc-flash PPE:<\/p><h3>1. PPE Category Method<\/h3><p>This method selects PPE based on:<\/p><ul><li>Equipment type<\/li><li>Maximum available fault current<\/li><li>Maximum fault clearing time<\/li><\/ul><p>El <strong>maximum equipment voltage covered by the PPE Category method is 15 kV<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Historically, this approach dates back to the <strong>2000 edition of NFPA 70E<\/strong>, which pre-dated IEEE 1584 (first published in 2002). At that time, PPE selection methods were limited, and the category tables (originally known as Hazard Risk Category Tables) filled the gap.<\/p><h3>2. <strong>M\u00e9todo de an\u00e1lisis de energ\u00eda incidente<\/strong><\/h3><p>This method is used to calculate <a href=\"https:\/\/brainfiller.com\/es\/technical-articles\/ieee1584-nfpa70e-2-second-arc-duration\/\">energ\u00eda incidente<\/a> at a defined working distance and is generally considered the <strong>preferred approach<\/strong> (and yes, that\u2019s my personal opinion).<\/p><p>However, there\u2019s a catch:<br \/><strong>IEEE 1584 is only valid up to 15 kV<\/strong>, so its equations cannot be used for higher-voltage systems.<\/p><p><strong>So\u2026 What Does NFPA 70E Require Above 15 kV?<\/strong><\/p><p>This is where things get interesting.<\/p><p><strong>NFPA 70E does not mandate a specific calculation method<\/strong> for incident energy. It requires that an arc-flash risk assessment be performed\u2014but it stops short of naming IEEE 1584.<\/p><p>Many people assume the use of IEEE 1584 is <em>required<\/em>. It isn\u2019t.<\/p><p>However, since its introduction in 2002, IEEE 1584 has become the <strong>globally accepted standard<\/strong> for arc-flash studies worldwide, which is why I do so much international travel &#8211; speaking at international conferences and teaching IEEE 1584 and NFPA 70E across the globe.<\/p><p>But once you exceed <strong>15 kV<\/strong>, you\u2019re officially outside the IEEE 1584 sandbox.<\/p><p>So what do you do then?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-56512c3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"56512c3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why IEEE 1584 Does Not Apply Above 15 kV<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fe53fc6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fe53fc6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>IEEE 1584 is an <strong>empirically derived model<\/strong> based on extensive laboratory testing.<\/p><ul><li>Both the <strong>2002 and 2018 editions<\/strong> were validated only up to <strong>15 kV<\/strong><\/li><li>Extrapolating the equations beyond that point is <strong>not supported<\/strong><\/li><li>Using IEEE 1584 above 15 kV is technically unjustified and could be risky<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-95c9b98 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"95c9b98\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What About the Lee Method?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-76d8bf3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"76d8bf3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>El <strong>2002 edition of IEEE 1584<\/strong> referenced theoretical methods for voltages above 15 kV. This was often interpreted as permission to use the <strong>Lee method<\/strong>.<\/p><p>El <strong>2018 revision removed this language entirely<\/strong>. IEEE no longer references alternative calculation methods for higher voltages.<\/p><p>The Lee method still exists, but it is generally considered <strong>very conservative<\/strong>, especially at medium- and high-voltage levels.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9f103a9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9f103a9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Options for Systems Above 15 kV<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a14869f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a14869f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Once you\u2019re above 15 kV, you need to move beyond \u201cstandard\u201d IEEE 1584 approaches.<\/p><h3>1. <strong>Arc-Flash Software<\/strong><\/h3><p>Some commercial tools are specifically designed for <strong>medium- and high-voltage systems<\/strong>, including:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Arc Pro<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>ETAP ArcFault\u2122<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>These alternative models better suited for higher voltages.<\/p><h3>2. <strong>IEEE C2 (NESC) as an Alternative Standard<\/strong><\/h3><p>For <strong>utility and electric supply systems<\/strong>, <strong>IEEE C2 \u2014 the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC)<\/strong> may be used.<\/p><p>NESC includes <strong>tables for PPE arc ratings<\/strong> based on:<\/p><ul><li>Voltaje<\/li><li>Fault current<\/li><li>Duraci\u00f3n del arco<\/li><\/ul><p>\u26a0\ufe0f A key limitation:<br \/>Many NESC tables and alternative calculation methods are based on <strong>phase-to-ground arc flash<\/strong>, not three-phase arc flash like IEEE 1584.<\/p><p>For transmission and distribution systems, phase spacing often makes it unlikely that a single-phase arc will escalate into a three-phase event.\u00a0<\/p><h3>3. <strong>DGUV 203-277 \u2013 Thermal Hazards Due to Electric Fault Arcing<\/strong><\/h3><p>DGUV 203-277 is a German guide applicable to systems up to 110 kV and is commonly used for arc flash hazard evaluation in conjunction with PPE tested under the IEC box test method (IEC 61482-1-2). Unlike the ASTM F1959 method, which provides an arc rating in cal\/cm\u00b2 (e.g., 8 cal\/cm\u00b2), the IEC method assigns an Arc Protection Class (APC), which differs significantly from traditional
