A veces, la gente se refiere a los valores altos en t\u00e9rminos de una bomba o alguna otra descripci\u00f3n sensacionalista. Aunque una energ\u00eda incidente calculada m\u00e1s alta puede ser m\u00e1s peligrosa, no todo es lo que parece. \u00bfEl valor alto se debe a una fuente muy potente o simplemente se debe a un dispositivo de protecci\u00f3n que posiblemente tarde mucho tiempo en despejarse? Cada uno se comportar\u00e1 de manera diferente.<\/p><p>Al realizar un estudio de arco el\u00e9ctrico, si la energ\u00eda incidente calculada excede cal\/cm^2 en cualquier ubicaci\u00f3n, la gente a menudo simplemente sacude la cabeza y pregunta: &quot;\u00bfY ahora qu\u00e9 hacemos?&quot; Necesitamos colocar el equipo en una condici\u00f3n de trabajo el\u00e9ctricamente segura, pero eso en s\u00ed mismo plantea cierto riesgo.<\/p><p>Cuando se supera el valor de 40 cal\/cm2, suele tratarse como un umbral absoluto de aprobaci\u00f3n o prohibici\u00f3n y puede desencadenar muchas respuestas y comentarios diferentes que no siempre son correctos. Por encima de 40 cal\/cm2, las etiquetas de arco el\u00e9ctrico pueden tener la declaraci\u00f3n \u201cNo hay EPP disponible\u201d. Este valor tambi\u00e9n se activa con frecuencia utilizando la palabra de advertencia \u201cPELIGRO\u201d en la etiqueta. Puede haber comentarios como: \u201cPor encima de ese valor, la presi\u00f3n de la explosi\u00f3n lo matar\u00e1\u201d. Mi comentario sensacionalista favorito que he escuchado es: \u201cPor encima de ese nivel, el EPP solo protege el cuerpo\u201d.<\/p><h2><strong>Verificaci\u00f3n de hechos<\/strong><\/h2><p>Es hora de verificar un poco los hechos sobre los arcos el\u00e9ctricos. \u201c\u00bfNo hay EPI disponible?\u201d Las clasificaciones de arco disponibles de equipos de protecci\u00f3n personal y ropa protectora est\u00e1n continuamente ampliando los l\u00edmites. Algunas clasificaciones ahora pueden superar las 100 cal\/cm2.<\/p><p>\u00bfQu\u00e9 ocurre con el argumento de la presi\u00f3n de la explosi\u00f3n? Un arco el\u00e9ctrico puede generar una onda de presi\u00f3n, que podr\u00eda ser significativa si se dan las condiciones adecuadas. Sin embargo, la explosi\u00f3n en realidad depende de la corriente de cortocircuito y de la velocidad a la que se libera la energ\u00eda. Decir simplemente que es una funci\u00f3n de una energ\u00eda incidente superior a 40 cal\/cm2 puede ser enga\u00f1oso.<\/p><p>\u00bfQu\u00e9 pasa con el uso de EPI para preservar el cuerpo? No me molestar\u00e9 en hablar de eso, aunque hace poco le pregunt\u00e9 a un grupo grande en uno de mis programas de capacitaci\u00f3n cu\u00e1ntos de ellos hab\u00edan escuchado esa afirmaci\u00f3n. Todos levantaron la mano y se rieron.<\/p><p>Entonces, \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 ha habido tanta confusi\u00f3n en torno al n\u00famero 40? Para comprenderlo mejor, retrocedamos unos pasos. Durante muchos a\u00f1os, la energ\u00eda incidente superior a 40 cal\/cm^2 se ha considerado ampliamente como un umbral en el que se debe evitar el trabajo energizado. En ese caso, simplemente hay que desenergizar y poner el equipo el\u00e9ctrico en una condici\u00f3n de trabajo el\u00e9ctricamente segura.<\/p><p>La importancia de 40 proviene de la Nota informativa 3 que se encontr\u00f3 en 130.7(A) de la Edici\u00f3n 2015 de NFPA 70E que establec\u00eda: \u201cCuando la energ\u00eda incidente excede 40 cal\/cm^2 a la distancia de trabajo, puede ser necesario un mayor \u00e9nfasis con respecto a la desenergizaci\u00f3n cuando se expone a peligros el\u00e9ctricos\u201d.<\/p><p>Sin embargo, esta nota informativa se elimin\u00f3 en la edici\u00f3n de 2018, lo que esperaba que pusiera fin a la confusi\u00f3n en torno a 40 cal\/cm^2. Pero no fue as\u00ed por completo. Muchos todav\u00eda consideran que este valor es un umbral especial, as\u00ed que profundicemos un poco m\u00e1s.<\/p><h3><strong>Energ\u00eda incidente<\/strong><\/h3><p>La gravedad de un arco el\u00e9ctrico se define por la energ\u00eda incidente prevista y normalmente se determina realizando un estudio de arco el\u00e9ctrico. La norma IEEE 1584, Gu\u00eda IEEE para realizar c\u00e1lculos de riesgo de arco el\u00e9ctrico, proporciona las ecuaciones que se utilizan para los c\u00e1lculos que normalmente se realizan con software de arco el\u00e9ctrico. Dos de las variables m\u00e1s importantes para determinar la energ\u00eda incidente son la corriente de cortocircuito del arco disponible y la duraci\u00f3n del arco el\u00e9ctrico, que normalmente se define como el tiempo que tarda en funcionar un dispositivo de protecci\u00f3n aguas arriba.<\/p><p>Esto significa que una corriente de cortocircuito de arco de magnitud inferior podr\u00eda dar como resultado un tiempo de despeje del dispositivo de protecci\u00f3n inusualmente largo, determinado a partir de la curva de tiempo-corriente del dispositivo. El resultado es una energ\u00eda incidente calculada muy grande, que a menudo supera el umbral de 40 cal\/cm^2. Desafortunadamente, la energ\u00eda incidente total no siempre es un buen indicador de si el arco el\u00e9ctrico generar\u00eda una presi\u00f3n de explosi\u00f3n significativa.<\/p><p>Los c\u00e1lculos basados en una corriente de cortocircuito de menor magnitud con un tiempo de despeje m\u00e1s prolongado podr\u00edan dar como resultado una energ\u00eda incidente calculada mayor que si hubiera una corriente de cortocircuito grande con una duraci\u00f3n corta. La mayor\u00eda de las veces, cuando los resultados de un estudio de arco el\u00e9ctrico indican ubicaciones donde la energ\u00eda incidente supera las 40 cal\/cm^2, se debe a una duraci\u00f3n de arco m\u00e1s prolongada en lugar de a una corriente de cortocircuito grande.<\/p><h3><strong>El\u00e9ctricamente seguro<\/strong><\/h3><p>La norma NFPA 70E siempre enfatiza la importancia de colocar los equipos el\u00e9ctricos en condiciones de trabajo seguras desde el punto de vista el\u00e9ctrico en lugar de trabajar con equipos energizados.
