La forma de calcular la corriente de arco ha evolucionado desde la d\u00e9cada de 1980 hasta la actualidad.<\/p><p>La corriente de arco siempre ser\u00e1 menor que la corriente de cortocircuito \u201catornillada\u201d determinada mediante la realizaci\u00f3n de un estudio de cortocircuito \u201ctradicional\u201d que se utiliza para evaluar la capacidad de interrupci\u00f3n de los dispositivos de protecci\u00f3n. Durante un arco el\u00e9ctrico, la corriente de cortocircuito fluye a trav\u00e9s de un espacio de aire que introduce una impedancia de arco. El resultado es que la corriente de cortocircuito de arco siempre ser\u00e1 menor que la corriente de cortocircuito atornillada en la misma ubicaci\u00f3n.<\/p><p>\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 ser\u00eda tan importante una corriente reducida de la impedancia del arco? Parece que una corriente mayor ser\u00eda peor. Al evaluar las clasificaciones de interrupci\u00f3n, una corriente mayor es el peor caso, pero un estudio de arco el\u00e9ctrico es diferente.<\/p><p>La energ\u00eda incidente potencial de un arco el\u00e9ctrico depende de dos variables principales: la corriente de cortocircuito del arco y la duraci\u00f3n del arco, que se define por el tiempo que tarda en funcionar un dispositivo de protecci\u00f3n anterior. La corriente de arco m\u00e1s baja puede hacer que el dispositivo de protecci\u00f3n tarde m\u00e1s en activarse, lo que da como resultado una mayor duraci\u00f3n y una energ\u00eda incidente mayor (y m\u00e1s peligrosa).<\/p><h3><strong>D\u00e9cada de 1980: sin corriente de arco<\/strong><\/h3><p>En la d\u00e9cada de 1980, es decir, en los primeros d\u00edas de los c\u00e1lculos de arcos el\u00e9ctricos, las ecuaciones eran te\u00f3ricas y bastante primitivas para los est\u00e1ndares actuales, \u00a1pero fue un buen comienzo! Las primeras ecuaciones no ten\u00edan en cuenta la corriente de arco y se basaban en la corriente de cortocircuito m\u00e1xima. Al determinar cu\u00e1nto tiempo puede tardar en funcionar un dispositivo de protecci\u00f3n, se utiliza su caracter\u00edstica de corriente de tiempo. Si se utiliza la corriente de cortocircuito m\u00e1xima, podr\u00eda indicar que el dispositivo de protecci\u00f3n se dispara instant\u00e1neamente. Sin embargo, la corriente de arco m\u00e1s baja (y desconocida) podr\u00eda hacer que el dispositivo tarde m\u00e1s en dispararse, lo que genera una mayor energ\u00eda incidente.<\/p><h3><strong>2000 \u2013 Corriente atornillada y 38 por ciento<\/strong><\/h3><p>En el Anexo D.3 de la norma NFPA 70E se enumeran las ecuaciones de un documento t\u00e9cnico publicado en 2000. Estas ecuaciones se basan en pruebas de arco el\u00e9ctrico reales, lo que supone una mejora significativa con respecto a los m\u00e9todos te\u00f3ricos anteriores. Sin embargo, todav\u00eda no exist\u00edan ecuaciones de cortocircuito por arco el\u00e9ctrico. Como soluci\u00f3n alternativa, el m\u00e9todo hace referencia a investigaciones anteriores y establece: \u201cPara sistemas de 480 voltios, el nivel m\u00ednimo aceptado por la industria para una falla de arco el\u00e9ctrico sostenida es el 38 por ciento de la falla atornillada disponible\u201d. Eso fue todo: multiplique la corriente de cortocircuito atornillada por el 38 por ciento y determine si la corriente reducida hace que el dispositivo de protecci\u00f3n tarde m\u00e1s en funcionar, lo que da como resultado una mayor energ\u00eda incidente. \u00a1PROGRESO!<\/p><h3><strong>2002 \u2013 Corriente de arco y 85 por ciento<\/strong><\/h3><p>Cuando se public\u00f3 la primera edici\u00f3n de IEEE 1584 en 2002, una de las mejoras m\u00e1s significativas fue la introducci\u00f3n de ecuaciones de corriente de cortocircuito por arco. Sin embargo, dado que podr\u00eda haber muchos factores desconocidos que influyeran en la corriente de arco real, se la denomin\u00f3 com\u00fanmente \u201cestimaci\u00f3n\u201d. Como estimaci\u00f3n, \u00bfqu\u00e9 suceder\u00eda si la corriente de arco real fuera menor? Nuevamente, podr\u00eda resultar en que el dispositivo de protecci\u00f3n tardara m\u00e1s en funcionar y generara una mayor energ\u00eda incidente.<\/p><p>\u00bfLa soluci\u00f3n? A\u00f1adir un paso adicional en el que la corriente de arco estimada simplemente se multiplicar\u00eda por el 85 por ciento y se volver\u00eda a evaluar el tiempo de funcionamiento del dispositivo de protecci\u00f3n con la corriente ligeramente inferior. Se comparar\u00edan los casos 100% y 85% y se utilizar\u00eda el peor de los casos para el resultado del estudio. El multiplicador 85% se utiliz\u00f3 para todos los c\u00e1lculos de corriente de arco para sistemas de menos de 1000 voltios.<\/p><h3><strong>2018 \u2013 Corriente de arco y VarC<sub>F<\/sub><\/strong><\/h3><p>Bas\u00e1ndose en casi 2000 nuevas pruebas de arco el\u00e9ctrico, la edici\u00f3n 2018 de IEEE 1584 ha realizado mejoras adicionales en los c\u00e1lculos de corriente de arco para lograr una mayor precisi\u00f3n. Sin embargo, las nuevas ecuaciones son mucho m\u00e1s complejas e incluyen diferentes configuraciones de electrodos, diez coeficientes diferentes y otras variables. El proceso implica varios pasos de c\u00e1lculo, incluida la determinaci\u00f3n de la &quot;corriente de arco promedio intermedia&quot; con ecuaciones basadas en 600, 2700 y 14 300 voltios. El segundo paso es utilizar la corriente intermedia y calcular la corriente de arco final en el voltaje espec\u00edfico del sistema.<\/p><p>De manera similar a la edici\u00f3n de 2002, se calcula una segunda duraci\u00f3n del arco utilizando una corriente de arco reducida para determinar si hay un efecto en el tiempo de funcionamiento del dispositivo de protecci\u00f3n. A diferencia del valor fijo de 85% utilizado en la edici\u00f3n de 2002, la edici\u00f3n de 2018 ha introducido una nueva ecuaci\u00f3n para un factor de correcci\u00f3n de variaci\u00f3n de corriente de arco VarC<sub>F<\/sub> que se utiliza para todos los voltajes de 208 a 15.000. El VarC<sub>F<\/sub> Depende en gran medida del voltaje y tiene el mayor impacto en voltajes entre 208 y 600 voltios.<\/p><h3><strong>La evoluci\u00f3n contin\u00faa<\/strong><\/h3><p>Han sido necesarias varias d\u00e9cadas, cientos de personas, decenas de miles de horas de trabajo y millones de d\u00f3lares en investigaci\u00f3n para que nuestra comprensi\u00f3n de los arcos el\u00e9ctricos y los c\u00e1lculos relacionados llegue a este nivel. Algunos dicen que el costo y el tiempo son demasiados.
