About Jim Phillips

Jim Phillips, P.E.

For over four decades, Jim Phillips has been helping tens of thousands of people around the world understand electrical power system design, analysis, arc flash and safety. Having taught over 3000 training programs during his career to people from all seven continents (Yes Antarctica is included!) He has developed a reputation for being one of the best trainers and public speakers in the electric power, arc flash and electrical safety industry.

Jim is a Registered Professional Engineer and his past experience includes everything from planning transmission systems, to design and analysis of industrial, commercial and utility power systems, co-generation plant design, forensic analysis, and commonly asked to testify as an expert witness.

Author, Trainer, Internationally Trusted Expert

Jim literally wrote the book on arc flash studies, with his Complete Guide to Arc Flash Calculation Studies. Throughout his four-decade career, Jim has authored over 100 articles and technical papers for leading publications and organizations. As a Contributing Editor for Electrical Contractor Magazine on Arc Flash and Electrical Safety, his work has also been published in Europe and Australia. Notably, he contributed to the European Arc Flash Guide, which raised awareness of arc flash hazards across Europe.

Jim began teaching in the early 1980s at Square D Company, and in 1987, he founded what is now Brainfiller.com. He has developed over 25 training programs covering topics like protective relaying, power system analysis, grounding, arc flash studies, NEC®, NFPA 70E®, and more. He also created the internationally recognized website ArcFlashForum.com.

With his vast expertise, Jim is often called upon to investigate electrical accidents, equipment failures, and system malfunctions—cases that range from mis-operation to personal injury and fatalities.

Jim earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from the Ohio State University. His career began with Square D Company’s Power System Analysis Group where he was responsible for power system studies, software development and training at their engineering training programs – where his love of teaching all began.

Later, Jim was with Ohio Edison Company where he performed transmission planning studies and then headed up the short circuit studies group. He was also an adjunct faculty member for Stark State College where he taught classes on electrical power systems.  Jim formed the engineering company Phillips Engineers + Consultants which provided electrical and mechanical design services, power system studies and power quality analysis.  Today his focus is primarily on electrical power training and arc flash training, standards development and forensic analysis.

Jim and his wife of over four decades live in Scottsdale, Arizona and have two children and one grandson.
